Meet The Rescue Lions of Drakenstein

Sometimes I wonder if I should change the theme of my blog from just travel related content, to travel and animal content. I have a massive passion for animals, and pretty much love them all. If you are furry and friendly looking, then I’m going to like you before I’ve even met you! Adam and I have just come back from an epic two weeks in South Africa. We spent five days on safari, and then also visited a number of other animal sanctuaries. Despite racking up quite a chunk of hours on safari, we spotted loads of wild game, […]

Monkeying Around In Jozani Forest

Centrally located on the island of Zanzibar, the Jozani Forest is home to over 2,000 Red Colobus monkeys. Unlike other black and white Colobus monkeys found across Africa, the red monkey is unique to Zanzibar. The forest is protected by the Jozani-Chwaka National Park and was declared a nature reserve in the 1960’s. The only one of its kind on the island! There are many tours available to book from Stonetown, otherwise your hotel should be able to help arrange a taxi for you. Alternatively, hire a car like we did and drive there yourself. As you approach the entrance […]

Paradise Wildlife Park

Paradise Wildlife Park

My close friends will already know how much I love animals (mainly the furry ones, not the reptiles so much), so this weekend Adam and I visited the Paradise Wildlife Park in Broxbourne, Hertfordshire. I stumbled across the park a few months ago, and have wanted to visit ever since. So off we went! Tickets cost £15.95 per adult / £14.30 per child, but you can save 10% by booking online in advance. Make sure you tick the gift aid box too to ensure the park can reclaim 25p tax for every £1 spent! Once through the Welcome Centre, you’ll […]

Sloths Of The Jaguar Rescue Center

I visited Costa Rica in 2014 as part of a 6-week trip across Central America, and there was one thing that I couldn’t wait to see –  a sloth! I’m a huge animal lover, so there was no chance I was going to visit Costa Rica without seeing one of these furry tree dwellers. Sloths can be difficult to spot as they not only spend up to 20-hours a day sleeping in the rainforest, but also move at an incredibly slow pace of around 40-yards per day. Sounds a little bit like me with a terrible hungover, ha! To guarantee […]

The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust

The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is an amazing organisation that rescues animals, predominantly elephants, from all over Africa. The trust frequently receive reports of trapped, injured or abandoned elephant calves, and swiftly head out to the location to rescue the animals. Depending on the location of the rescue, the calves are either driven back to the orphanage in an epic overland journey, or flown back by helicopter. All the rescues are documented and filmed, and can be found on the DSWT website under each individual orphan’s profile. If you are anything like me, then you’ll need your tissues ready as there […]

Three Days In Masai Mara National Park

Following on from a few other posts I’ve written about my trip to Tanzania and Kenya, I thought I’d go into a little more detail about our 72 hours in Masai Mara to give you a better idea of what our safari experience was really like! Day One It had already been a long 5-hour drive from Lake Naivasha, including two hours of driving off road on an extremely bumpy dirt track, but our guide kindly offered to take a detour to our hotel and take us on an impromptu game drive. As soon as we entered the park we […]

Borneo Orangutan Care Project

I would never usually stay at a 5 star hotel such as the Shangri-La chain, but when the opportunity arose I clearly jumped at the chance! I visited Borneo back in 2007 on a short stopover to Australia, and at the time there was a bizarre offer for a free stay at the hotel when booking internal flights with Malaysian Airlines. The stunning Shangri-La Rasa Ria Resort & Spa in Kota Kinabalu is located on Pantai Dalit Beach. The hotel sits on a private corner of the island surrounded by 400 acres of tropical rainforest. Some visitors may enjoy the […]
